Thor: Ragnarok is being hailed as a "masterpiece" of the comic book genre by Joss Whedon.

Whedon certainly knows a thing or two about the genre, considering that he guided Marvel Studios through the first two Avengers movies and is now working on rival DC's Justice League.

The filmmaker has also been extremely critical about the genre at times, yet there was nothing but praise when he offered his review of the Taika Waititi-directed Thor sequel.

"Here's the thing: @TaikaWaititi has made a modern masterpiece," Whedon tweeted. "Epic, hilarious, gorgeous, heartfelt, and hilarious. I'm SO HAPPY #hilarious."

Waititi got a similarly glowing review from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 director James Gunn, who recently called Thor: Ragnarok the funniest Marvel movie to date.

"I don't think any film of the modern era has captured the batshit crazy fun of '80s classics like Flash Gordon and Buckaroo Banzai as well as Taika Waititi has here," Gunn opined.

"I felt like I was fourteen watching a magical VHS tape that exploded into something grand. It's the most colorful of all Marvel films – I mean, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is practically sepia-tone in comparison – and it's also the funniest."

The bottom line is go see Thor: Ragnarok, which is now playing in the UK and opens on November 3 in the US. Watch a trailer below:
